Marcos, Angara cite partners in PISA gains

MANILA, Philippines — Educators, learners and other partners who contributed to the Philippines’ gains in the 2025 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) were recognized yesterday by President Marcos and Education Secretary Sonny Angara.

At the President Corazon Aquino National High School in Pasay, Angara said the PISA results were a “triumph of local solidarity.”

“Teachers and partners proved that resourcefulness and grit can bridge the resources gap. Our educators, especially those who went out of their way to support neighboring schools, demonstrated the absolute best of the Filipino spirit,” Angara said.

Electric cooperatives, local businesses, corporate foundations and civic groups joined the effort by providing backup generators, stable internet connectivity and essential school supplies, the Department of Education noted.

“With the continued backing of local government units, private partners and dedicated teachers, we will push harder to close the achievement gap and make quality education accessible to every Filipino child,” Angara said.

Around 20 public and private schools in Metro Manila participated in the PISA assessment.

Filipino students’ scores in reading, mathematics and science have improved significantly in the PISA.

The Philippines recorded a mean score of 373 in science, 371 in mathematics and 367 in reading – up by 17, 16 and 20 points, respectively, from the 2022 PISA results.
