P42 wage hike approved for Central Visayas
MANILA, Philippines — At least 337,476 private sector workers in Central Visayas will receive an increase of P42 in their daily minimum wage after the National Wages and Productivity Commission affirmed the region’s latest wage order.
The Department of Labor and Employment said workers in Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental and Siquijor would benefit from the adjustment, which will take effect on Oct. 14.
Under the new wage rates, the daily minimum wage in Class A areas, including Metro Cebu, will increase to P582, while workers in Class B areas covering Bohol, Negros Oriental and Siquijor will receive P542.
The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) criticized the wage increase, saying it is insufficient to address rising living costs in the region.
TUCP spokesperson Carlos Miguel Oñate questioned why workers in Central Visayas received a P42 increase, equivalent to about two-thirds of the P60 wage hike granted to minimum wage earners in Metro Manila.
