Lightning kills Grade 10 student in Tuburan

CEBU, Philippines — A 16-year-old Grade 10 student died after being struck by lightning while on a picnic along the seashore in Purok Santan, Barangay Daanlungsod, Tuburan, Cebu, at around 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 2.

Police said the victim was a male student at Tuburan National High School and a resident of the said area.

According to a report from the Tuburan Municipal Police Station, the 16-year-old was rushed by rescuers from ANDAM Tuburan to Tuburan District Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician at around 3:36 p.m.

Meanwhile, another minor victim survived the incident. Police identified him as a 14-year-old boy who remained conscious and was placed under observation by medical personnel at the hospital’s emergency room.

Initial police investigation, based on the account of the 16-year-old's girlfriend, showed that the victims were having a picnic with friends along the seashore when lightning struck.

As of Friday, July 3, the 14-year-old remained under medical observation, while police continued their investigation into the incident.
