2 die, 1 missing in Bohol treasure hunting activity

TAGBILARAN CITY, Philippines — Two people were confirmed dead while another was reported missing during a treasure hunting activity in Dagohoy, Bohol over the weekend.
The fatalities – identified as Marcelo Augis, 57, and Raymundo Valmoria, 35 – were believed to have died from suffocation, while their companion, Gaudioso Añasco, 54, has yet to be found as of yesterday.
The victims reportedly dug a hole inside a cave in Barangay Poblacion to supposedly look for treasures, according municipal disaster officer Erwin Cajilo.
Responding members of a local rescue team recovered the bodies at past 5 p.m. on Friday.
Mayor Sofronio Apat suspended the search and rescue operation due to the danger it posed to the rescue team.
Authorities said the victims had been operating in the cave since a month ago.
The rescue team found a generator set, ladder, jackhammer, extension cables, headlights and gasoline as well as a narrow hole in the cave.
Police said that most villagers were not aware that a treasure hunt had been ongoing in the area until a resident informed them about the victims’ activity.
