Navotas landfill fire enters third week

MANILA, Philippines — With the Navotas sanitary landfill fire nearing its third week, authorities remain unsure when the blaze will be extinguished.
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon, Mayor John Rey Tiangco, Environment Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna and Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya inspected the site yesterday.
Soil covering and compaction operations have reduced hotspots at the fire-hit sanitary landfill, Tiangco said.
Technical support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency is ongoing, he said.
Operations were briefly halted as a precaution due to shifting wind direction.
Some parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces earlier reported poor air quality.
The Bureau of Fire Protection has been coordinating with agencies and international partners to contain the fire that started on April 10.
