Isko asks DPWH: Rush Beata Bridge repairs

MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor Isko Moreno asked the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Wednesday to speed up repair works on the Beata Bridge in Pandacan.
“I hope that the DPWH will fast-track the bridge’s rehabilitation,” Moreno said. “Residents and non-residents are having a hard time passing through the bridge since it is still under repair.”
Moreno made the appeal to the DPWH after a rider was thrown off the Beata Bridge and died after losing control of the motorcycle on Sunday.
Video footage showed the motorcycle rider hitting the gutter, after which the vehicle landed on a brewery under the bridge.
The Beata Bridge stands without lights and steel railings, posing danger to motorists, especially at night.
A barangay official said the steel railings were stolen, but no theft complaints had been filed with the Manila police.
The bridge also lacked safety signage to guide motorists, according to residents.
The victim’s father appealed to the Manila city government to address safety problems in the area.
He urged authorities to reinstall safety railings at the Beata Bridge “to avoid similar accidents.”
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon has yet to comment about the incident.
