Fire hits Sierra Madre

MANILA, Philippines — A forest fire struck a portion of the Sierra Madre mountain range in Kalayaan, Laguna on Tuesday afternoon.
The blaze raged for 11 hours before it was put out at past 5 a.m. the following day, firefighters said.
FO1 Emmanuel Sampilita of the Kalayaan Fire Station said the fire, which started at around 4 p.m., reached second alarm and was declared under control at 10:15 p.m.
The blaze destroyed about three hectares of the forest in Barangay San Juan.
Probers have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, the municipal government of Itogon in Benguet has suspended all tourism activities in the mountains of Ave Maria, Bidawan, Cotcot, Pigingan, Ugo and Ulap due to forest fires.
Mayor Bernard Waclin issued an executive order suspending trekking, running, camping and other outdoor activities in the areas effective April 20.
The municipal government said the fires were sparked by the hot weather.
