PNP on alert after Lanao clash

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police has placed all PNP units in the Bangsamoro region on heightened alert following an armed encounter with the Dawlah Islamiyah-Maute group in Lanao del Sur that left 10 suspected terrorists dead.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered police units to coordinate with the military for follow-up operations to prevent possible retaliatory attacks and ensure stability in affected communities.
“All our units in Lanao del Sur and nearby areas are on alert and are in constant coordination with the military in the conduct of operations to crush the remaining threat,” Nartatez said.
Police said the clash occurred during a manhunt for suspects identified only as Usman and Muslih, believed to be the leader and sub-leader of the group.
Authorities said the terrorist group opened fire when approached, triggering a firefight with authorities and resulting in the death of 10 Dawlah members.
The PNP said the heightened alert is a precautionary measure to prevent retaliation and protect civilians.
