2 dead, 7 injured in Bataan road crash

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga, Philippines — Two people died when a closed van malfunctioned and rammed several houses before hitting seven maritime cadets who were out jogging along MAAP road in Mariveles, Bataan on Saturday.
Col. Marites Salvadora, Bataan police chief, said Katrina Mejes, who was pregnant, and her 11-year-old daughter Kate died during treatment at the Mariveles Mental Wellness and General Hospital.
The mother and daughter were residents of Sitio Marina in Barangay Alasasin.
Salvadora said the seven cadets were on their way back to the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific when the speeding van hit them.
She said that van driver Hermino Nicolas, who is in the custody of the Mariveles police, claimed that he lost control of the steering wheel before ramming several houses, a tricycle and the jogging cadets.
