Rare Cantor softshell turtle found in Apayao

PUDTOL, Apayao, Philippines — A critically endangered giant softshell turtle, considered as one of the world’s rarest freshwater turtles, has been discovered in a river in Apayao.
The Cantor giant softshell turtle or Pelochelys cantori was rescued by personnel of the community environment and natural resources office based in Calanasan town, with the help of the municipal government of Pudtol, according to the CENRO.
The reptile was accidentally caught by a villager in the Apayao River.
Environment personnel examined and monitored the reptile to determine its condition and ensure that it can be returned safely to its habitat.
Authorities discovered that the turtle was carrying eggs, indicating the species continues to breed in the Apayao River system, which is known to host rare and threatened wildlife.
Environment officials urged residents to report and surrender any wildlife that they may catch or spot in rivers or forests.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources confirmed that the Cantor giant softshell turtle is a critically endangered and threatened species.
