Isko security escort shot dead in Tondo

MANILA, Philippines — A security escort of Manila Mayor Isko Moreno was killed by motorcycle-riding gunmen in Tondo shortly after midnight yesterday.

George Capistrano, 56, a retired police officer and resident of Barangay 134 in Manila, was declared dead on arrival at the Tondo Medical Center.

In a report, the Manila Police District said the shooting occurred in front of Capistrano’s house at the corner of Salonga and Buendia streets at past 12 midnight.

Based on closed-circuit television footage, Capistrano was on a motorcycle when the assailants fired at him.

The victim’s wife said she was inside the house when she heard two gunshots. When she rushed outside, she saw Capistrano lying on the road.

The suspects fled after the attack and are being hunted by police.

Authorities said an investigation is underway to determine the motive for the killing and identify the assailants.
