MANILA, Philippines — The recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island has disrupted classes in 107 public schools, affecting up to 52,975 students, the Department of Education (DepEd) reported yesterday.

The moderately explosive eruption of Kanlaon on Thursday afternoon was followed by ashfall events, which affected 50 barangays.

DepEd’s disaster risk reduction and management services said it is closely monitoring the impact of Kanlaon’s restiveness on schools, students and school employees.

“Based on initial assessment, around 85 schools may be affected or potentially exposed to volcanic hazards associated with the current alert level. At least 107 schools in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental and in the cities of La Carlota and San Carlos in Negros Occidental have shifted to other mode of learning to ensure continuity,” the agency said.

The DepEd gave assurance that it would continue coordinating with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, particularly regarding pre-emptive evacuation efforts and impact reporting.

“As of today, no school is being used as an evacuation center,” it said.

School officials have been advised to coordinate closely with local disaster management offices to strengthen emergency preparedness.

Schools directly affected by Kanlaon’s activity were told to implement contingency plans; secure learning materials, records and equipment, and preposition emergency supplies and essential resources, DepEd said.
