MANILA, Philippines — As the Lenten season and Ramadan approach, the Philippine National Police is stepping up its security efforts by deploying more PNP personnel to public places as well as mosques and churches.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police visibility and community engagement would be prioritized to ensure safe worship and reflection during the religious period, which begins on Feb. 18.

“We are deploying a sufficient number of personnel, including our Salaam Police Center units, to mosques and churches nationwide,” Nartatez said.

The PNP is implementing real-time security adjustments and is coordinating with local religious leaders to manage crowds and prevent opportunistic crimes, he added.

A nationwide security plan has been activated, covering major transport hubs, places of worship and popular tourist destinations.

Authorities will also establish police assistance desks that will be manned around the clock near major cathedrals and mosques.

The Ramadan will run from Feb. 17 to March 19. Lent is from Feb. 18  to April 2.
