Remulla to sue BFP officials over extortion

MANILA, Philippines — Criminal charges will be filed, possibly beginning next week, against about 40 current and retired Bureau of Fire Protection officials over alleged extortion schemes tied to BFP fire safety inspections, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said Thursday.

Remulla said the cases stem from a probe into practices wherein businesses were allegedly pressured to buy fire extinguishers or secure sprinkler system contracts to obtain fire safety permits.

“They empowered themselves and it’s virtually rent-seeking. It’s so corrupt,” he said in an interview on The STAR’s “Truth on the Line.”

According to Remulla, investigators uncovered a paper trail showing coordinated activities during inspections, prompting the Department of the Interior and Local Government to begin case buildup against those involved.

“Even the retired and current (BFP) officials will be charged,” Remulla said, adding that the complaints could be filed as early as next week.

Remulla disputed claims used to justify repeated purchases, saying extinguishers typically last about three years and that not all establishments require multiple units or costly systems.

He warned that the scheme has heavily affected small and medium enterprises, which make up the majority of the economy.

“We’re cleansing the ranks and trying to build a better system. The country deserves better,” he said.
