Electric cable theft disrupts power to 8,000 in Quezon City

MANILA, Philippines — Manila Electric Company (Meralco) warned the public against the theft of electrical facilities, citing serious safety risks and service disruptions it could cause.

In a statement on Monday, January 12, Meralco said a recent attempt to steal power cables in Quezon City temporarily disrupted electricity service to nearly 8,000 customers.

The company said the incident left the suspect in critical condition after sustaining flashover burns from contact with energized facilities.

Power was restored after about four hours following the swift response of Meralco crews, which repaired the damaged lines.

Safety risks and penalties

“This incident underscores the grave dangers of stealing power cables and electrical facilities. Beyond the inconvenience caused by service interruptions, these acts pose life-threatening risks due to the high voltage of Meralco facilities,” said Froilan Savet, Meralco senior vice president and head of networks.

“Any contact with energized facilities can lead to electric shock, severe injuries, or even death,” he added.

Savet also urged the public to help ensure the safety and reliability of electricity service by promptly reporting suspicious activities involving Meralco facilities.

In 2025, Meralco recorded 285 incidents of theft involving electrical facilities, including power cables. Four of these incidents resulted in physical injuries.

The company said stealing power cables, electric meters, and other electrical facilities violates Republic Act 7832, or the Anti-Electricity Pilferage Act, which carries penalties including imprisonment and fines.

Meralco called on communities to remain vigilant and to immediately coordinate with authorities or the company if they observe attempts to tamper with or steal electrical infrastructure.
