MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police’s detention facility at Camp Crame will be demolished to give way to a new office building, according to Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla.

Remulla said the PNP Custodial Center will be condemned, hence it could no longer accommodate inmates.

“A new building will be built so it is up for demolition in the next two months,” he said on “Politiko Talks” on Bilyonaryo News Channel on Friday.

Several high-profile personalities were previously detained at the PNP Custodial Center. Among these were Sen. Jinggoy Estrada and former senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., who were tagged in the pork barrel scam but were later acquitted by the Sandiganbayan.

Another is former senator and now ML party-list Rep. Leila de Lima, who spent seven years at the detention facility on drug charges filed by the administration of former president Rodrigo Duterte. A Muntinlupa court acquitted her of the charges.

Apart from politicians, suspected Abu Sayyaf rebels and other high-risk inmates were also previously detained at the facility.

Currently, only one person is detained in the facility, PNP spokesman Col. Randulf Tuaño said.

Remulla said they will use the detention facilities of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Quezon City and Taguig for other high-profile personalities such as those accused of corruption in anomalous flood control projects.
