MANILA, Philippines — Up to 744 leptospirosis cases have been reported in Central Visayas in the past five weeks.

The cases were recorded from Nov. 1, to Dec. 10, following the onslaught of Typhoon Tino, which caused massive flooding in several areas in the region.

“A majority of the cases showed symptoms such as fever, headache, chills and muscle pains after exposure to floodwaters,” the Department of Health said in a post on social media.

“Of the cases, 715 or 96 percent have recovered and avoided serious complications,” the DOH added.

Active case findings in the region continued and supply of doxycycline is sufficient, health officials said.

The public had been advised to consult a doctor immediately for the correct prescription of antibiotics.

Local government units are adopting measures to prevent the number of cases from increasing.
