PNP steps up drive vs hoarders, profiteers

MANILA, Philippines — With Christmas just around the corner, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified operations against hoarding and profiteering following reports of soaring prices of meat and vegetables in several areas.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said additional police personnel were deployed to public markets, supermarkets and wet markets to deter illegal price manipulation, panic buying and public disturbances.
“In coordination with government agencies, we have been conducting operations against those involved in activities that take advantage of our people this holiday season,” Nartatez said.
President Marcos has issued a directive for the PNP and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla to protect consumers and ensure the steady supply of basic goods.
Nartatez said the PNP has been coordinating with the Department of Trade and Industry and local government units to monitor prices, support inspections and conduct intelligence-driven operations against hoarders and profiteers.
