Isko visits Philippines first liver transplant patient at PGH

MANILA, Philippines — A nine-year-old boy diagnosed with biliary atresia became the country’s first patient who successfully underwent pediatric liver transplant at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH).
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno visited the boy at the PGH yesterday.
Hospital director Dr. Gerardo Legaspi and University of the Philippines-Manila chancellor Michael Tee accompanied Moreno.
The transplant was funded through the P30 million raised and donated by Moreno to UP-PGH to support life-saving pediatric surgeries.
In 2019, Moreno helped pool more than P30 million for UP-PGH through donations from private companies, philanthropic partners and his own talent fees.
Moreno also donated P1 million of his endorsement fees to the PGH cancer ward.
A substantial portion of the funding was earmarked for children with liver diseases, with PGH targeting to send young patients abroad for more affordable liver transplant procedures.
The remaining half supported chemotherapy for pediatric cancer patients, with treatment costs ranging from P120,000 to P500,000 per child.
