Quezon road mishap kills student
GUMACA, Quezon, Philippines — A student was killed after he was run over by a bus that developed engine trouble before rolling down a cliff in Gumaca, Quezon on Thursday night.
Seventeen others were injured in the accident that occurred at past 9 p.m. in Barangay Villa Arcaya, police said.
Joshua Lopez, 17, died instantly from severe head and body injuries, while his cousin, Ivan Lopez, 17, was taken to the Gumaca District Hospital for treatment of injuries.
Reports said the driver, Arnel Brotamante, lost control of the wheel after the bus developed engine trouble as it was traveling down a winding road.
The bus hit the Lopezes who were walking along the roadside before the vehicle plunged into the ravine.
The accident prompted authorities to temporarily close the affected portion of the road to ensure public safety.
