Malabon city jail warden sacked
MANILA, Philippines — After inmates conducted a noise barrage on Thursday to complain about ill treatment, Malabon city jail warden Fronstone Dang-Iw was relieved from his post yesterday.
The inmates went to the rooftop and threw cartons and bottles – the third incident reported – as they shouted laments about a chaotic visiting system and the repeated serving of bottle gourd soup.
Lucky Dionisio was named the new jail warden.
“They felt the warden had been too strict and unreasonable,” Malabon Mayor Jeannie Sandoval told reporters, adding that inmates are not only pointing fingers at the warden. She did not elaborate.
The noise barrage lasted for two hours after Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) officials, along with Sandoval, went into negotiations with the inmates.
According to Baby Noel Montalvo, BJMP-National Capital Region director, Dang-Iw was shocked by the inmates’ grievances.
“When he reached out to them, the inmates would not talk to him and their temper seemingly became worse,” Montalvo said.
The director said the BJMP is following a menu for all its facilities, adding that officials “are transparent about it.”
The bureau is looking into the claims made by the inmates.
