DND sympathizes with typhoon victims, cancels anniversary party

MANILA, Philippines — After a devastating typhoon that has left over 100 people dead, the Department of National Defense announced yesterday that it would cancel the DND’s 86th founding anniversary celebration on Friday.
“We will instead devote the day in doing our mandated duty to be in the service of our people 24/7. We stand united with the victims of the recent typhoon and we sympathize with those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that others may live,” the DND said.
The Philippine National Police has also decided to keep the PNP’s Christmas and year-end celebrations simple and meaningful, following President Marcos’ directive for government agencies to observe modest festivities in solidarity with Filipinos affected by recent calamities.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered all regional, provincial and station commanders to avoid lavish gatherings and instead focus on community-oriented activities such as gift-giving and outreach programs for less fortunate families.
“The PNP fully supports the President’s call for simple and meaningful celebrations. As public servants, we must lead by example in practicing humility, discipline and compassion, especially during this season of giving,” Nartatez said. “The essence of Christmas is not in grand festivities but in sharing kindness and showing care for our fellow Filipinos.”
Malacañang earlier reminded government offices to keep holiday celebrations simple as many Filipinos are still reeling from the impact of recent earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and storms, including Typhoon Tino.
