MANILA, Philippines — A man who drew public backlash for wearing a Philippine National Police uniform as a Halloween costume has apologized, saying he meant no disrespect to the PNP and never intended to impersonate an officer.

The incident, which went viral online, showed Daryll Isidro wearing a sleeveless PNP uniform at a Halloween party.

The photo sparked outrage among police personnel and netizens, prompting the PNP to condemn the act and launch an investigation.

“I sincerely apologize to all police officers and the institution they represent,” Isidro said in a deleted statement on Facebook.

“I had no intention to offend or misrepresent anyone. It was purely meant as a costume for a Halloween party. I realize now that my actions were inappropriate and I take full responsibility,” he added.

Isidro said he immediately deleted the photo after being called out, but it had been shared on social media.

National Police Commission (Napolcom) Commissioner Rafael Calinisan issued a show-cause order to Isidro.

But Calinisan said Napolcom would no longer pursue charges against Isidro after hearing his explanation in person.

Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. earlier called the use of the police uniform as a costume an “outright insult” to the dignity of the service.

Article 179 of the Revised Penal Code prohibits the unauthorized use of official uniforms or insignia.

“Our uniform carries a history of valor and sacrifice. It represents the people’s trust in us,” Nartatez said.

“To misuse it as a costume trivializes the meaning of service and mocks those who risk their lives to keep our communities safe,” he added.

Despite the apology, Nartatez reminded the public to show respect for the uniform and what it symbolizes.
