MANILA, Philippines —  A fire gutted 1,000 houses and displaced nearly 2,000 people in Barangay Catmon, Malabon on Wednesday, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection.

The BFP said the blaze began at 4:49 p.m. in Banal na Krus in Sitio 6. It was put out by 11:53 p.m.

According to the Malabon Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, 1,906 affected people sought temporary shelter at the Catmon Evacuation Center, Catmon Integrated School, Acacia Elementary School and Tonsuya Covered Court.

Malabon Mayor Jeannie Sandoval ordered all city departments placed on high alert and to provide the affected residents with food, modular tents and medical services as well as mobile water and sanitation facilities.

“We have ensured that every department of the city government is ready to assist affected families,” Sandoval said.
