MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Migrant Workers is exhausting all possible legal means to help the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who figured in the death of her employer’s child in Kuwait, the DMW said yesterday.

In a statement, the DMW said it would pursue diplomatic measures to ensure a fair and just trial for the Filipino worker.

“We do respect Kuwait’s laws, but the (Philippine) government’s mandate is clear, and that is to protect the rights and dignity of every Filipino wherever they are,” the DMW said in a statement.

“We extend our condolences to the grieving Kuwaiti family for their loss. At the same time, we also sympathize with the OFW and her family in this difficult time,” the statement added.

According to the DMW, it immediately extended legal and consular assistance, along with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Philippine embassy in Kuwait, upon learning of the incident.

Local reports in Kuwait alleged that the OFW placed an 18-month-old baby inside a washing machine and switched it on, leading to the child’s death.

“A lawyer is handling the case and uses all legal processes available under Kuwaiti law, including the filing of an appeal,” the DMW said.

Aside from this, the DMW said it is “giving assistance to the OFW’s family, ensuring that her children are protected from the negative impact of this untoward incident.”
