One killed, dozens hurt in the aftermath of Mendiola-Recto riots
MANILA, Philippines — One person died and 47 others were injured after violent clashes between rioters and police in Recto, Manila, on Sunday, September 21, the Department of Health (DOH) said.
In a statement Monday, September 22, the DOH confirmed that 48 people were taken to Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center.
One unidentified male was declared dead on arrival due to stab wounds.
Injuries among police and protesters. Two police officers sustained minor injuries, including lacerations and bruises, and were discharged after treatment.
Six other patients were treated for various injuries, including a leg cut, eye trauma, head trauma, a gunshot wound, and a severe arm wound.
Four were released, while two remained confined for further care.
Additionally, 39 protesters underwent physical examinations as part of the process before they were taken into custody. None were reported in immediate danger.
The unrest erupted Sunday in Mendiola and Recto, where rioters clashed with police from afternoon until evening. Authorities said 216 people were arrested.
