Kanlaon quakes may trigger eruptions – Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines — The intensified seismic activity at Kanlaon Volcano could lead to hazardous eruptions that may endanger nearby communities, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned yesterday.
Phivolcs said at least 72 volcanic earthquakes were recorded from midnight to 8 a.m. yesterday, adding that the current conditions heighten the possibility of sudden explosions.
“The increase in volcano-tectonic earthquake events could lead to increased chances of weak to moderately explosive eruptions that could generate life-threatening volcanic hazards,” Phivolcs warned.
Phivolcs said communities within the four-kilometer permanent danger zone should “strictly remain evacuated.” It warned those within the six-kilometer radius to stay vigilant and be prepared to evacuate in case the unrest escalates.
