MANILA, Philippines — A former employee of a 78-year-old businesswoman acted as an insider of members of a crime ring who kidnapped the victim and held her captive for nine days before she was rescued in Quezon City on Thursday.

Maj. Eleonor Villaruz, spokesperson for the police Anti-Kidnapping Group, said yesterday the insider whom she did not identify is among the 11 suspects arrested by authorities.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the victim, a widow from a prominent family in the industrial sector, was kidnapped on Sept. 2.

Villaruz said the victim’s kidnapping would not have occurred if there was no person from her inner circle who was familiar with her daily routine.

Charges of kidnapping, serious illegal detention and illegal possession of firearms have been filed against the suspects.

Villaruz said the kidnappers initially demanded P500 million in ransom. She refused to disclose if the suspects received the money.
