BOC to create task force on balikbayan boxes

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs will form a task force to address recurring issues raised by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) about balikbayan boxes, the BOC announced yesterday.

In a memorandum, Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said the group should address issues such as delays, excessive duties and unclear regulations, which “often result in frustration and financial burden for balikbayans.”

“A critical aspect affecting our balikbayans is the customs process upon their return, particularly on the importation of personal goods, balikbayan boxes and household items,” Nepomuceno said.

He ordered Deputy Commissioner Agaton Teodoro Uvero to create the task force and for the BOC assessment and operations coordinating group to form a committee to look into the concerns of OFWs, including that of the balikbayan boxes.

“The task force shall conduct an in-depth research and analysis of concerns pertaining to balikbayan boxes in customs processes and to identify the best practices of countries with economies comparable to the Philippines to improve on efficiency, transparency and fairness of customs procedures,” Nepomuceno said.

Nepomuceno said the initiative “demonstrates our firm resolve to protect the interests of overseas Filipinos by ensuring that balikbayan boxes are treated with fairness and transparency” as the BOC honors their sacrifices and reaffirm its duty to serve the OFWs better.
