MANILA, Philippines — The preserved remains of Mali, the elephant that became the main attraction at the Manila Zoo, will be transferred to the National Museum, according to Mayor Isko Moreno.

Mali died in November 2023 due to old age.

The elephant was brought back to the zoo for public display in December 2024 after undergoing taxidermy for 11 months. The procedure was carried out by PetEternity for free.

Moreno discussed Mali’s transfer with National Museum of the Philippines director general Jeremy Barns.

Moreno said the city government does not have sufficient technology and human resources to properly preserve Mali’s remains.

Mali will soon join other preserved animals at the National Museum of Natural History, including Philippine eagles and “Lolong,” the world’s largest saltwater crocodile.

Originally named Vishwa Ma’ali, the elephant was donated by Sri Lanka to the Philippines in 1981.
