Samar gov’s ‘kuracha’ draws flak
MANILA, Philippines — A video showing Samar Gov. Sharee Ann Tan dancing the kuracha as peso bills rained down on her during a community event has drawn backlash online, with critics questioning the display of revelry amid the plight of flood-hit residents in the province.
The footage, posted on Facebook and attributed to an event at the Samar Convention Center on Aug. 22, showed Tan dancing with local officials and guests as money was tossed in the air.
Netizens who reposted or reacted to the clip commented that the dance might be inappropriate considering the plight of flood-stricken residents.
But other netizens defended the event, saying the kuracha is part of the traditions of Samar and Leyte islands.
In a statement, the Office of the Governor denied that the video was taken during a “lavish dinner” or was related to government funds, clarifying that the footage was from the Hermano Night of the Catbalogan City fiesta.
“The kuracha is a cultural tradition long practiced in Samar and Leyte, from the city centers to even the farthest barangays. Part of this custom is the ‘gala’ or money showering, which symbolizes generosity and community spirit. It is in no way a display of luxury or wealth, but a practice deeply embedded in our way of celebrating faith and togetherness,” the statement read.
“We recognize that some may feel that public officials must avoid joining activities such as the kuracha in order to remain sensitive to the people’s concerns. We deeply respect this view,” the statement declared.
