COTABATO CITY, Philippines — A 12-year-old girl died instantly in a grenade explosion in Barangay Labangal, General Santos City, on Wednesday, August 20.

Investigators from the General Santos City Police Office and Police Regional Office-12 theorized that the victim, identified as Angel Malid, may have found the fragmentation grenade and unconsciously removed its safety pin, triggering the blast.

Major Miguel Angelo, chief of the Makar Police Station, said the out-of-school girl usually helped her parents collect empty bottles and other recyclable materials that they sold to junk shops as a source of income.

According to barangay officials, the girl brought the grenade to their home in Zone 4, Purok Mudia Extension, Barangay Labangal, where it exploded in her hands.

Personnel of the General Santos City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported that the child died instantly from shrapnel wounds caused by the explosion.
