Woman, daughter die in landslide

Roel Pareño - The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY , Philippines — A woman and her nine-year old daughter were buried alive in a landslide that occurred in the hinterlands in this city on Tuesday night.

Two grandchildren of the woman were injured in the incident that occurred at past 9 p.m. in Barangay Sibulao, according to village officials.

Reports said the children were struck by rocks and soil that rolled down the slope of a nearby mountain in Sitio Lower.

The remains of the fatalities, identified as Carmen Fernandez and her daughter Caren, were recovered by responding villagers, according to village watchman Ramil Pilar.

Pilar said that heavy rain in the past few days caused a portion of the slope to collapse.

Fernandez’s husband Erwin said he was having dinner while his wife and daughter were preparing to sleep when mud and rocks came crashing down on their house.

Mayor Khymer Olaso, who happened to be near the area to inspect the result of a police anti-narcotics operation, ordered his aides to rush the children to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries.

Olaso directed the city social welfare and development office to assist the family.                                     –
