MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos has directed his economic team to study the P1 fare hike petition of various transportation groups to mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs.

Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said consultations and public hearings would be held to take into account the concerns of all stakeholders, including drivers, transport operators and commuters.

“The directive of the President is to study it because many will be affected by it,“ Castro said at a press briefing yesterday. “The DOTr (Department of Transportation) is not the only one that will decide, but the entire economic team so we can determine if people can shoulder the higher fare cost.”

The petition seeking to raise the minimum jeepney fare from P13 to P14 was filed by the Pangkalahatang Sanggunian Manila & Suburbs Drivers Association Nationwide or Pasang Masda, Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers’ Associations of the Philippines and the Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations.
