PGH capacity ‘manageable’

MANILA, Philippines — After exceeding its capacity in the past days, the situation at the emergency room of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) is now at a “manageable level.”
“The situation is more manageable,” PGH director Dr. Gerardo Legaspi said in a statement on Saturday.
He said the PGH occupancy rate is at 98.96 percent. The emergency room now has 199 patients, down from 300 last week. Fifty-six leptospirosis patients have been admitted to the PGH since Aug. 1.
“The PGH remains open to serve the public,” Legaspi said.
Support from the Department of Health (DOH) helped in improving the hospital’s overcrowding, he said.
Last week, the DOH advised those needing medical attention to proceed to other government-run hospitals after the PGH’s emergency room exceeded capacity.
Nineteen hospitals in Metro Manila have opened “fast lanes” to attend to leptospirosis patients.
