‘Metro drainage system needs overhaul’
MANILA, Philippines — With outdated infrastructure and worsening waste disposal problems, Metro Manila’s drainage system must undergo a comprehensive overhaul to address persistent flooding, San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora said yesterday.
“We need to study our drainage system and craft a master plan that can handle our current population, volume of rainfall, the effects of climate change and garbage problems,” Zamora told dzBB.
Each of Metro Manila’s 15 million residents generates about one kilo of trash daily, he said, citing Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
Most of the waste ends up in rivers, creeks and drainage systems, leading to severe clogging and flooding in low-lying areas.
Over 500 flooding incidents within 24 hours across the capital had been reported by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.
