Visayas Mindanao grids placed on yellow alert

MANILA, Philippines — Power grids in the Visayas and Mindanao were placed under yellow alert yesterday due to unplanned shutdowns of several power plants, which strained supply amid higher demand.
Both grids were on yellow alert for two hours, from 6 to 8 p.m., according to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines.
The Luzon grid, meanwhile, remained in normal condition.
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the grid’s reserve requirement.
In the Visayas, 10 plants were on forced outages from April to July, while six others have been out since 2024.
Four facilities are operating at derated capacities, resulting in around 423 megawatts of unavailable capacity to the grid. The Mindanao grid, on the other hand, had 638.3 MW of unavailable capacity as 11 power plants were offline from June to July.
Two others have been down since 2024 and three are running on reduced output.
“We are currently validating the report on the actual status in Mindanao and the Visayas,” Energy Undersecretary Mario Marasigan said.
