Kanlaon alert status downgraded

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has downgraded the alert status of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros from Level 3 to 2 due to decreasing volcanic activity.
Evacuees are expected to be allowed to return home, particularly those living outside the volcano’s four-kilometer permanent danger zone.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development said there are 1,287 families, composed of 4,180 people staying in 18 evacuation centers in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.
Up to 3,309 families, composed of 10,651 people are staying with relatives or friends as of Tuesday.
Donato Sermeno III, chief of the Office of Civil Defense-Negros Island Region, said more than 3,800 evacuees may be allowed to go home now that the volcano’s activity has subsided.
Although the alert level has decreased, residents near the volcano have been urged not to be complacent or think that the threat of an eruption has disappeared.
A pronounced change in monitored parameters may lead to raising the alert level anew.
