MANILA, Philippines — Heavy to torrential rain expected from Tropical Storms Dante and Emong as well as the southwest monsoon may push down lahar and mud deposits from Mayon Volcano in Albay, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs yesterday warned communities surrounding Mayon that the rain could generate volcanic sediment flows and muddy streamflows as well as runoffs in rivers and drainage systems.

Residents in identified lahar hazard zones have been urged to remain vigilant and be ready for any eventuality.

The advisory said that heavy downpour could mobilize pyroclastic density current deposits generated during volcanic eruptions in 2018 and 2023.

These materials are concentrated in watershed areas of major channels such as Miisi, Mabinit, Buyuan and Basud.

Phivolcs said that older and more erodible deposits on the eastern and western slopes may also be remobilized as lahar due to erosion from stream and channel flows.
