‘Remains of Negrense OFW coming home soon’
MANILA, Philippines — The remains of Filipina caregiver Leah Mosquera, who was critically injured in a missile attack in Israel and died a month later will be repatriated soon, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said.
According to the Philippine embassy in Israel, the 49-year-old Mosquera underwent several surgeries at the Shamir Medical Center and remained under intensive care before passing away on Sunday.
The embassy said Israel is working to recognize Mosquera.
“The Israeli government has recognized her as a person injured in a terror attack and is now working toward her recognition as a victim of terror. As such, her immediate family will receive lifelong support from the Israeli government as part of Israel’s unwavering commitment to stand beside them during this difficult time,” the embassy said in a statement.
Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said the provincial government will also be extending financial assistance to Mosquera’s family in San Enrique town.
“She really fought for her life. But I guess the injuries she had sustained were too much for her,” Lacson said.
The OWWA said Mosquera would have turned 50 on July 29.
“Preparations are underway for the repatriation of OFW Mosquera to the Philippines,” the OWWA said, adding that the government would shoulder the cost of repatriation and burial.
According to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), Mosquera was one of four Filipinos who were injured and hospitalized due to an Iranian missile attack in Israel on June 15.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to Ms. Mosquera’s family and loved ones. Her dedication and quiet heroism embody the strength and sacrifice of our OFWs who carry the hopes of their families with extraordinary courage, even in the face of danger,” the DMW said in a statement. – Pia Lee Brago
