18 passengers rescued from sunken pumpboat in Basilan

COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Eighteen passengers were rescued by the Maritime Police and fishermen in Basilan after their pumpboat capsized off Maluso town on Saturday.
The Maritime Police and local government officials provided the passengers with food and dry clothing, Brig. Gen. Jaysen de Guzman, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region police chief, told reporters yesterday.
Citing reports reaching his office, De Guzman said the pumpboat departed from Barangay Tattalan in Tungkil, Sulu early on Saturday. Battered by big waves and strong winds, the boat capsized about a mile off the waters of Barangay Kalangkapisahan.
Maj. Geobani Calle, Basilan Maritime Police station chief, said the rescue was conducted together with the Philippine Coast Guard and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
Calle said the passengers were all in stable condition after the rescue. No one was reported injured or missing in the incident.
