11 ‘terrorists’ surrender

John Unson - The Philippine Star

COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Eleven alleged members of the outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) surrendered and pledged allegiance to the government in Maguindanao del Sur yesterday.

The former terrorists committed to help the Army’s 6th Infantry Division (6ID) persuade their remaining comrades to abandon the group and surrender.

Maj. Gen. Donald Gumiran, chief of the 6ID, said the surrenderees renounced their BIFF memberships in a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Army’s 90th Infantry Battalion in Datu Saudi Ampatuan.

The ceremony was attended by local officials and representatives from different government agencies.

Gumiran said police officials in six towns and other units of the Maguindanao del Sur police helped facilitate the surrender of the former terrorists, who turned over firearms and improvised explosive devices to authorities.
