Group seeks closure of Pampanga landfill
MANILA, Philippines — An environmental group has raised concerns over the operation of a landfill facility in Porac, Pampanga.
The Pinoy Aksyon for Governance and the Environment urged the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to suspend the operation of the Eco Protect Management Corp. (EPMC) in Barangay Mancatian due to the unstable site of the landfill.
The group said the facility is built on lahar, a type of volcanic debris known to be susceptible to erosion, particularly during heavy rain or seismic activity.
According to the group’s campaign officer, Emruche Guangco, the landfill’s location and design may threaten nearby communities due to potential erosion-related incidents and waste flow.
Villagers are reportedly complaining that waste materials are washed into the nearby Pasig-Potrero River.
The EPMC denied commiting any violation, saying barangay officials have inspected the facility and found it compliant with environmental laws.
It said corrective actions have been taken in response to previous concerns raised by residents.
