MANILA, Philippines — The Chavit Coliseum, a new multi-purpose sports and events arena, was inaugurated in Vigan, Ilocos Sur on Saturday, coinciding with the birthday celebration of former Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson.

Singson said the coliseum was a long-time vision during his term as governor but was only realized under the leadership of his brother, Gov. Jerry Singson, citing the province’s improved financial standing.

The coliseum, with a seating capacity of 9,000 to 10,000, is expected to host concerts, sporting events and other large-scale gatherings.

Saturday’s event also marked the launch of “Chavit: Legend of the Philippines,” a biography written by Maciej Mikurda and the oath-taking of newly elected provincial officials led by Gov. Singson.

Among the highlights in the birthday celebration, Chavit blew out the candles on more than 50 birthday cakes.
