Rizal Monument open for close-up selfies tomorrow

MANILA, Philippines — In celebration of Jose Rizal’s 164th birth anniversary tomorrow, the National Parks Development Commission (NPDC) is opening the site beyond the usual barriers at the Rizal Monument in Manila to allow the public to take close-up selfies with the statue of the national hero.

In a Facebook post, the NPDC announced it has lined up activities for the occasion, including the “Rizal Up Close” event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“The public will be allowed to go beyond the bollards around the Rizal Monument. Everyone is reminded to be mindful of the proper decorum when taking photos at the monument,” the commission said.

Normally, visitors are not permitted near the monument, which is guarded by the Philippine Marine Corps’ Marine Security and Escort Group.

A wreath-laying ceremony is scheduled at 8 a.m. tomorrow to pay tribute to Rizal’s life and legacy.

At the Noli Me Tangere Garden, interactive activities will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. These include “Mirroring Rizal,” where guests can take mirror selfies and reflect on the question, “What does being a modern-day hero mean to you?”

A “Stamp-A-Souvenir” booth will also be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Early participants in interactive games will receive personalized keychains, bag tags or pouches bearing Rizal’s signature.
