2 cops axed over road rage assault on traffic enforcer
MANILA, Philippines — Two Manila police officers involved in a road rage incident in Valenzuela have been ordered dismissed from service by the People’s Law Enforcement Board (PLEB) of the city government.
Staff Sergeants Ernesto Camacho Jr. and Robert Masong Cabudoy Jr. were found guilty of assaulting traffic enforcer Ronaldo David on July 14, 2024.
According to David, he was on a motorcycle on the way to work when he saw Camacho and Cabudoy on a motorcycle without helmets and wearing slippers.
When David tried to approach them, the two police officers allegedly pulled a gun, punched him and threatened to kill him.
Councilor Ricar Enriquez, who chairs PLEB-Valenzuela District 1, said the board ruled unanimously to dismiss the two from the police service.
“Cursing and pointing a gun at a poor traffic enforcer clearly show wrongdoing on the part of these officers,” Enriquez said.
Valenzuela Mayor Wes Gatchalian condemned the behavior of Camacho and Cabudoy who were allegedly drunk at the time of the incident.
“There are no arrogant police officers here in Valenzuela,” Gatchalian said. “Their uniform and the firearm come with responsibility, integrity and moral accountability.”
David said he was satisfied with the decision, but still fears for his safety, as the dismissed officers allegedly continue to threaten him.
Gatchalian assured David of protection.
David also revealed that the officers offered him P30,000 in exchange for dropping the case, but he refused.
Enriquez confirmed the settlement offer made by the police personnel during the hearings.
The dismissal order has been forwarded to the Manila Police District where the two officers are under the custody of the regional personnel holding and accounting section.
In addition to the administrative case, the two were also convicted by the Metropolitan Trial Court of grave threats and physical injury. They were sentenced to four months in prison and ordered to pay P15,000 in damages.
