P307 million imported sugar seized in Bulacan

MANILA, Philippines — Imported sugar valued at P307 million was seized in a series of raids in Meycauayan, Bulacan on Friday, authorities reported yesterday.
Up to 95,568 sacks of sugar were found in three warehouses located in a business park in Barangay Perez, which agents of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) raided at around 9 a.m.
The raids were based on a warrant for violation of Republic Act 10845, or the Anti-Agriculture Smuggling Act in relation to RA 10659 or the Sugarcane Industry Development Act.
CIDG officer-in-charge Col. Ranie Hachuela said storing or hoarding of sugar and other agricultural commodities, regardless of quantity is illegal.
Hachuela said the government is protecting farmers from unscrupulous traders and importers who disrupt production, supply and price stability as well as the country’s food security.
He said stiffer penalties await smugglers and hoarders of agricultural products.
