106 students qualify for Philippines Math Team
MANILA, Philippines — Up to 106 public and private school students have qualified as members of the Philippine Mathematics Team and are set to compete in math contests abroad.
This was announced on Tuesday by the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG) of the Philippines, which has been mentoring students for local and international math tilts.
The new Philippine math team members include Matt Gerard Navarro of Philippine Science High School, Albert Steven Tan of St. Jude Catholic School, Sabrina Louis Cheong of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, Adrian Jeric Ang of Xavier School, LJay Apostol of Gordon Heights 1 Elementary School and Joshua Mari Velasco of Quezon City Science High School.
“These students have overcome the Young Mathematicians In-house Intensive Training Program and earned the spot in the elite circle of mathematicians, being the cream of the crop in their grade levels,” MTG head Simon Chua said.
Last year, MTG-trained math aces bagged over 300 medals from various contests abroad, bringing their five-year medal haul to 6,857.
