Cops confirm sniper killed Cagayan mayor
SAN FERNANDO, La Union, Philippines — The Cagayan Valley police has confirmed that a sniper killed Mayor Joel Ruma of Rizal town in Cagayan, who was shot dead while campaigning on April 23.
Brig. Gen. Antonio Marallag, Cagayan Valley police director, said investigation showed that a single bullet killed Ruma.
Marallag said witnesses saw a laser light on Ruma’s chest before the mayor was shot.
He said the trajectory of the bullet was directed toward the chest of Ruma.
The bullet exited at the lower back of the victim.
Probers said the gunman was positioned on a higher area, which gave him a full view of his target.
Authorities said the killing was politically motivated.
Ruma was seeking reelection in the May 12 polls. He was campaigning in Barangay Illuru Sur when he was killed.
Cagayan Gov. Manuel Mamba has offered P1 million for any information that can lead to the identity and arrest of the gunman.
