16 Calamba cops cited for bravery

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna , Philippines — Sixteen members of the Calamba police in Laguna have been commended by the National Police Commission (Napolcom) for showing bravery during the serving of an arrest warrant for an alleged contract killer.
Lt. Col. Victor Sobrepeña, chief of the Calamba police, and his men were honored by Napolcom-Calabarzon director Owen de Luna and Napolcom-Laguna chief Joicel Sopeña during a ceremony at the Calamba city hall on Monday.
De Luna said Sobrepeña and his men showed bravery when they served the warrant on the suspect, identified as Mark Lee Almendral, in Barangay Palingon on March 22.
Almendral, who had four arrest warrants for murder and frustrated murder, hurled a grenade and drew a gun, triggering a shootout that resulted in his death.
Police arrested Almendral’s partner, Rowena Manila, for alleged assault and obstruction of justice.
